Spirent TestCenter RFC 2544 Benchmarking Test Package

How to Test Network Elements?

When testing and homologating equipment, we need to perform a number of tests to obtain parameters that determine device performance. Often, online tools (or tools on proprietary servers) are used to determine some of the important characteristics in equipment, meaning not all important parameters are measured, and moreover, test conditions can vary for each tested device since they depend on the link to the server, availability, etc.

This indicates that it is necessary to use a test methodology so that all these devices can be comparable to each other.

For this, we turn to RFC2544.

What is RFC2544?

RFC 2544 is the network device benchmarking test specification used since 1999.

The RFC 2544 test methodology defines a specific set of tests that users can perform to measure and report the performance characteristics of network devices and services. The tests measure throughput, latency, frame loss rate, and burst frames. The test methodology allows defining several parameters, such as different frame sizes, test time for each test iteration, and frame format.

RFC2544 measurements were originally designed to measure the actual capacity of an Ethernet device, but nowadays it is widely used for different types of interfaces, including WiFi.

How is the Measurement Performed?

Normally a measurement device with two ports or interfaces is used where one of them will inject traffic and the other will either receive it or act as an intelligent loop returning the measurement traffic back to the injection port for verification.

What equipment performs the tests in a certified manner?

Spirent’s solution for performing these tests, RFC2544 and others, is called Spirent TestCenter (STC).

Using the Spirent TestCenter™ architecture, RFC 2544 benchmarking can be executed faster with nanosecond precision at 10 Gigabit scale and high density.
